Possible Procedures:

1. IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO NC WISE OWL: Start at NoveList K-8 in the Elementary or Middle School Zones
  • Try "Advanced Searching" to select reading levels, age ranges, awards, etc.
  • Note that the results include a "Books" tab and a "Lists and Articles" tab (these include bibliographies of more similar books, award-winning lists, lesson plan ideas/picture book extenders, etc.)
  • Select a book you are interested in and note that you can read reviews and use it to find more books (check boxes in the right sidebar to find similar books or select "read-alikes" from the right sidebar)

2. Go to "GoodReads" and sign in/create an account
  • Search for topics like "bullying" - from the results you can browse books or click on the "listopia" tab to see what's available
  • OR
  • Click on "Explore" at the top and use genres to find possible books - you can also select "listopia" from the drop down list and find a list that might help you
  • Use the GoodReads review of a book to look for more awards, find related books, etc.
  • Click on the Amazon link for the GoodReads book if you need to find reading level or want to buy a book
  • Click on the Libraries link for the GoodReads book to see if a copy is housed in your local library
(NCSU Students/Staff - make sure you are on the NCSU network - click on the Librari
es link and then select "Find Text at NCSU" and then "Check the Library Catalog")

3. Consider trying out
  • BiblioNasium is the social network students in grades 4 – 12 can use to set up virtual bookshelves and keep track of what they’ve read, what they like, and what they plan to read. Students will read more consistently when they connect with friends to share and recommend their favorite books. English, ELL, and Reading teachers will appreciate the inclusion of Lexile ranges. Grades 4-12.
  • LitPick provides free electronic books to students in grades 4-12. Students take on the role of a book critic, reading books, developing and posting reviews anonymously on the LitPick site where other students can read them. Members can also participate in the LitPick threaded discussion forum with authors, publishers, publicists, and parents who are interested in learning about YA literature. Use LitPick to provide access to free eBooks and promote reading reviews for students by students.
